CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) - Two American flags hung upside down have marred the reopening of a gas station in Cranston.

Iqra Choudhry, daughter of the Bestway gas station’s owner, tells The Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1ZlBiJd ) that the placement of the flags, which signifies distress, was a mistake. Choudhry says the clerk didn’t understand what he was doing and was confused. He was fired soon after.

The flags were upside down for about two hours.

Choudhry said some callers complained and threatened to boycott the store.
