MADISON, W.Va. (AP) - Public hearings are set on a proposal to close three elementary schools in Boone County.

Media outlets report the meetings will be held in November on county schools Superintendent John Hudson’s proposal to close Wharton, Nellis and Jeffrey Spencer elementaries and move their students to existing schools.

Hudson says the three schools aren’t financially efficient enough to operate.

He says the county school system has lost millions of dollars in the past two years, mostly from lower property tax collections.

So far, meetings are set for Nov. 2 at Wharton Elementary and Nov. 9 at Van Elementary.
