CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Police have detained a man who they say set fire to his mother’s house and then fled, saying he wanted police to shoot him.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a news release that officers arrived Thursday to assist firefighters responding to a Charlotte house fire. A woman told officers that her son had run away after setting the fire.

Police say the knife-wielding man left and said he was going to get a gun, in an attempt to get the police to kill him.

Police helicopter pilots located the unidentified man, who was holding a knife to his throat. An officer tackled him after he threw down his knife.

The man was taken to a hospital for minor injuries and an evaluation. He had not been charged as of late Thursday.
