JASPER, Ga. (AP) - Authorities have identified the pilot who died in a small airplane crash in Pickens County.

Local news media reported Friday that 21-year-old flight student Michael Joseph Hughes died in the crash. The crash occurred Thursday evening about a half-mile from the airport in Jasper as the aircraft was returning to the runway shortly after takeoff.

WXIA-TV https://on.11alive.com/1QcVRRP) reports that Hughes was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities described the aircraft as a Tomahawk-style single-engine airplane.
