COVENTRY, R.I. (AP) - Police are investigating after Western Coventry Elementary School received a recorded notification of an active shooter at the school that turned out to be an error.

The Coventry Police Department said Friday the school received a recorded message in the morning indicating there was a “shooter on campus.”

Police put the school on lockdown until it was confirmed there was no active shooter on school grounds.

Police determined the call came from Hamilton College in Clinton, New York, which had a report of an armed gunman on campus and had initiated notification procedures. The report was later determined to be a false alarm.

Police are investigating why the phone number for Western Coventry Elementary is listed as one of Hamilton College’s contacts to notify.
