CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - The state climatologist says most of August was relatively cool and dry across Illinois.

Climatologist Jim Angel of the Illinois Water Survey said Tuesday that the average rainfall across the state was 2.95 inches for the month. That’s more than half an inch below average for August and comes after what had been a very wet June and July.

But Angel noted widespread differences in rainfall for August. Many areas east of St. Louis and in northern Illinois had 3 to 5 inches.

The average statewide temperature for August was 72 degrees. That’s 1.6 degrees below average.
