LAS VEGAS (AP) - Clark County residents will see a bump in their sales taxes next year after officials approved a proposal aimed at expanding the police force.

Clark County commissioners voted 6-1 Tuesday on the so-called More Cops proposal, which will raise the county’s sales tax rate from 8.1 percent to 8.15 percent starting in January.

Law enforcement officials have tried unsuccessfully for a decade to get such a tax approved.

The latest version is a smaller increase than previous proposals. It’s projected to raise nearly $15 million so Las Vegas police can hire another 133 officers.

It’s also expected to bring nearly $5 million for officers in Henderson, North Las Vegas, Mesquite and Boulder City.
