PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rhode Island Department of Labor and Training has settled with a construction company that will pay more than $730,000 in back wages, interest and penalties for mischaracterizing workers during a drywall job.

The Providence Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1fTEFUK ) Gov. Gina Raimondo’s office announced Tuesday that Cardoso Construction LLC will pay about $352,000 in back wages to the workers and will pay the department the same amount as a penalty.

Officials say the company will also pay a $27,000 fine that works out to about $1,000 per worker.

Officials say the company acknowledged violating state worker protection laws. It mischaracterized workers during a job at the University of Rhode Island.

The governor’s office says it’s increasing efforts to enforce state labor laws.
