MONROE, N.C. (AP) - Misdemeanor fraud charges have been filed against a woman for alleged activities while on the State Board of Education and Union County school board.

The State Bureau of Investigation announced Marcella Ramirez Savage was charged Tuesday on five counts, including two for swearing falsely to official reports. Her Union County court appearance is Sept. 25.

The SBI says the Union County sheriff asked the agency to investigate Savage.

The Union County school board last November found more than two dozen problems with Savage’s expenses, including the submission of mileage reimbursements from both boards for the same event. Savage resigned from the state board, then the Union County board a few months later.

Savage’s lawyer didn’t respond to an email. A woman answering a phone on Savage’s campaign documents declined comment.
