SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A popular Lake Powell spot has been temporarily closed after a tankful of fuel from a boat spilled into the water.

Glen Canyon National Recreation Area officials say in a statement that a visitor reported the spill Monday afternoon. Officials then discovered a bright neon sheen on the lake’s surface and closed the Wahweap Beach. They believe the spill came from an anchored boat.

Officials won’t be reopened until officials determine it’s safe for visitors.

Crews are using pads especially designed to absorb petroleum to clean up the spill. The fuel covers 1,000 yards between Wahweap Beach and Wahweap Boat Rentals.
