RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - An 18-year-old man convicted last week of murdering a Garner couple has been sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Multiple media outlets report Judge Paul Gessner handed down the sentence for Jonathan Santillan on Tuesday, four days after a jury found Santillan guilty of two counts of first-degree murder.

Jose S. Flores Mendoza and his wife, Maria Saravia Mendoza, were found dead on Jan. 5, 2013, inside their Garner duplex after gunmen fired on their home.

The Mendozas’ two sons, ages 3 and 15, survived the shooting.

Prosecutors contend the shooters went to the Mendoza home thinking they were at a duplex where a rival gang member once lived. The gang member had moved out about a year earlier and the Mendozas moved in afterward.
