CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - A Tampa Bay area has been sentenced to life in prison for killing his mother and her boyfriend.

A Pinellas County judge sentenced 20-year-old Benjamin Bishop on Tuesday. He was convicted last month of two counts of second-degree murder. He had been facing first-degree murder charges.

Authorities say Bishop was 18 in October 2012 when he killed his mother, Imari Shibata, and her boyfriend, Kelley Allen, with a 12-gauge shotgun. Prosecutors say Bishop shot the couple multiple times, then reloaded and continued shooting to make sure they were dead.

A defense attorney argued during Bishop’s trial that he should be found not guilty because he had a history of mental illness, including schizophrenia.
