ESSEX, Vt. (AP) - Presidential candidate Rand Paul says he’s a different kind of Republican and assured Vermont residents that he can win blue and red states.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1JK4WAM ) the Kentucky senator told Republicans at the Vermont Republican Party fundraiser that defending the U.S. Constitution sets him apart from rivals like Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush. He stopped in the state Monday on his way to New Hampshire and Maine.

Paul filled the Whitcomb Barn in Essex and garnered cheers for telling voters to push back against warrantless searches of phones and detention without trial.

Vermont Republicans gave Paul a quart of maple syrup and a standing ovation.
