PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Rev. George H. Pearce, a former bishop-in-residence of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence and an archbishop emeritus of Suva in Fiji, has died. He was 94.

The Providence Diocese announced Tuesday that Pearce had died at home in North Smithfield, Rhode Island, on Sunday.

Pearce was born in Boston and studied for the priesthood at Maryvale Preparatory Seminary in Bedford, Massachusetts, and at Marist College and Seminary in Framingham, Massachusetts.

The Providence Diocese says he became the first bishop of Apia, Samoa, in 1966, and was named archbishop of Suva, Fiji, in 1967. He also served at the Diocese of Hagatna in Guam.

Pearce retired in 1976 and came to Rhode Island the following year.

A funeral Mass will be held Sept. 4 at the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Providence.
