OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Democratic Sen. Brian Hatfield is leaving the Senate to work on rural economic issues for the state.

Hatfield, of Raymond, announced his departure Tuesday. He will be a sector lead based in the Office of Economic Development and Competitiveness at the state Department of Commerce. Other sectors include aerospace and marine.

Hatfield has represented the 19th Legislative District in the Senate since 2006. Previously, he served in the House from 1994 to 2004. His resignation from the Senate is effective immediately.
