KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee defensive lineman Andrew Butcher has been arrested on alcohol-related misdemeanor charges.

Butcher, an 18-year-old freshman from Alpharetta, Georgia, faces charges of public intoxication and underage consumption as well as a controlled access roadway violation. Knoxville police said Butcher was “running around” on Interstate 40 on Sunday at about 1:45 a.m. Police said the 18-year-old Butcher had a “very strong” odor of alcohol on his breath, was unsteady on his feet and had watery eyes and slurred speech.

Tennessee athletic department spokesman Ryan Robinson said Tuesday, “We are aware of the situation involving Andrew Butcher” and added that the matter would be handled internally.

Knoxville television station WATE first reported the arrest.
