HOUMA, La. (AP) - The state approved $1.6 million for the new Terrebonne Parish Emergency Operations Center, which will allow the parish to accept bids on its construction.

The Courier reports (https://bit.ly/1PIDrb0) it will sit on the new the 30-acre parish complex off Louisiana 24 north of the U.S. 90 overpass in Gray. That plot will also house a new animal shelter and juvenile detention center.

The current emergency operations center is only about 5,000 square feet. It is not outfitted to withstand hurricanes stronger than a category two.

During an emergency, the center will serve as a hub of operations for officials directing evacuation and recovery operations.
