VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - Police in Vancouver, Washington, say a police dog was in critical condition Tuesday evening after being stabbed by a suspect.

About 6 p.m., officers were trying to contact a man who had warrants for his arrest. Police say the man ran from police. A police K-9 unit in the area made contact with the man, who stabbed the dog.

The dog was taken in critical condition to an emergency veterinarian and was undergoing surgery Tuesday night.

Police did not release the man’s name. He was to be booked into Clark County Jail.
