WILLITS, Calif. (AP) - A body found in Northern California has been identified as a young woman who went missing three years ago.

The Ukiah Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/1JYIDX0 ) Thursday that 25-year-old Rachel Audrey Sloan of Laytonville, California went missing in August 2012.

A burned body was found in Willits on the afternoon of May 16, 2013.

But Sloan was not reported missing for another two years. Why it took so long for someone to report her missing remains unclear.

On Sept. 1, federal authorities notified the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office that the remains matched the DNA of Sloan.

Sloan was last seen by her family in Laytonville in August 2012. The circumstances leading up to Sloan’s death remain unknown. An investigation continues.
