LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) - A Boulder County sheriff’s commander accidentally shot himself in the thigh during routine practice at a law-enforcement firing range.

Sheriff’s division Chief Tommy Sloan says the commander, who has not been named, fired a ball round from a .45-caliber handgun as he was unholstering it Thursday morning. Sheriff’s deputies provided first aid.

The shooting happened at the Longmont Police Department and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Firing Range and Training Facility.

Longmont police will investigate the shooting and the sheriff’s office will do a follow-up review.
