DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A Florida deputy has been cleared in the fatal off-duty shooting of his 21-year-old son.

Following a nine-month investigation, prosecutors said Thursday that Palm Beach County Deputy Shatara Shatara was defending his wife from being attacked by their 21-year-old son, Khamis Shatara.

The shooting happened on Christmas Eve at the family’s Delray Beach apartment. Deputy Shatara said he woke up that morning to some commotion and reached for his service weapon. He said he left his room and found his son grabbing his wife’s neck. Shatara said he made several attempts to stop the attack before firing at his son.

The Palm Beach Post (https://goo.gl/3iEbeR ) reports that Deputy Shatara is back on full duty.
