LOS ANGELES (AP) - A former New York City fire captain has pleaded no contest to sexually molesting two 11-year-old brothers while he was visiting family in Los Angeles last September.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office says 52-year-old Wilbert Riera entered the no contest plea Thursday.

Riera resigned from the fire department Wednesday. His sentencing is set for Oct. 8.

Under terms of the plea agreement, the prosecutor’s office says that Riera will be sentenced to 270 days in county jail, followed by five years of formal probation. He’ll also be required to register as a sex offender for life.

His attorney, Shawn Holley, says she’s convinced of her client’s innocence, but that he could have faced life in prison if convicted at trial, and that risk was too great.
