GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - The Gillette City Council has shot down a proposed ordinance that would have allowed residents to raise chickens in their backyards.

The Gillette News Record reports (https://bit.ly/1LlpigC ) that the council decided not to move forward with the ordinance after about an hour of discussion at a public forum Tuesday. In an informal vote, only two council members supported the initiative.

The advocacy group Yes Chickens has been pushing to allow backyard farmers to have up to six laying hens. The group gathered more than 250 signatures on a petition for the allowance.

The council’s actions are not permanent, and the proposed ordinance could still be raised at later meetings.
