For the Fighting Irish to prove they are a national championship contender, they will have to end a five-game losing streak in true road games on their first visit to Charlottesville. The Cavaliers are in the midst of the most difficult September schedule in the country and would love to even their record with a victory.


Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire against the Virginia defense. The Cavaliers gave up 351 passing yards and three touchdowns last week in a 34-16 loss against UCLA, and Zaire threw for 313 yards with three touchdowns and just three incompletions in 22 attempts in a 38-3 rout of Texas.


Notre Dame: WR Will Fuller. A speedy receiver who led the Irish last season with 76 catches, 1,094 receiving yards and 15 touchdown catches and picked up where he left off in the opener against Texas. He had seven catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns, including a 66-yard score.

Virginia: RB Taquan Mizzell. The Cavaliers are trying to develop a power running game, but managed just 98 yards on the ground last week. Mizzell caught eight passes for 100 yards, but managed just 45 yards on 16 carries.


Notre Dame plays six games against Atlantic Coast Conference opponents this season, the most it’s ever played against one conference in a season. The Irish were 2-2 against ACC opponents last season. … The Irish are 17-0 under Brian Kelly when they don’t have any turnovers. … The Cavaliers are 4-5 against ranked teams visiting Scott Stadium under Mike London. … Virginia has 13 players that have already graduated, most in the nation.
