PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - A Passaic County man has been sentenced to serve 40 years in prison for the brutal stabbing death of the mother of his young daughter.

Twenty-six-year-old Kerry Richardson pleaded guilty July 1 to first-degree murder stemming from the April 2012 fatal stabbing of 21-year-old Katera Robinson.

Officials say Richardson violated a no-contact restraining order when he went to Robinson’s Paterson home with a knife on the morning she was murdered.

Prosecutors say Richardson stabbed Robinson repeatedly to the point where the knife’s blade broke off the handle.

Richardson’s 17-month-old daughter, who lived with Robinson, called 911 after he left the home. She was found next to her mother lying in a pool of blood.

Richardson is eligible for parole after he serves 34 years of his sentence.
