NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a man who’d been in the country illegally fell off the Rainbow Bridge and died while apparently trying to sneak back into the United States after taking pictures of Niagara Falls.

Customs and Border Protection says the 37-year-old Mexican national had gone out on the bridge which links Niagara Falls, New York and Niagara Falls, Ontario around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday to take pictures, perhaps not realizing he’d have to go through a Customs and Border Protection inspection upon his return.

Investigators believe he climbed over the rail in search of a way to re-enter undetected when he fell about 100 feet and landed on rocks along the Niagara River just below the Falls. Emergency crews later removed his body from the gorge.

His identity hasn’t been released.
