WILMINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A newly merged school district in Vermont wants to develop a closed high school building.

The towns of Wilmington and Whitingham consolidated their school districts in 2011. Officials want to re-purpose the Twin Valley High School Building in Wilmington, which closed in 2014.

Dennis Richter, chairman of the Wilmington School Board, tells Vermont Public Radio (https://bit.ly/1OCHipS ) the board has ideas for how to use the old building, but state laws might prevent their efforts.

Part of the school’s consolidation deal with the state included an agreement that the closed school wouldn’t be used for educational purposes.

Officials say the Agency of Education is going to work with lawmakers to find solutions for districts that close their schools and want to renovate the buildings.
