COVINGTON, La. (AP) - The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office says it has launched a criminal investigation into an apartment complex fire in Slidell.

The fire happened over the weekend at the Act X apartment complex. Detectives said earlier in the week that the fire had what they called “suspicious elements.”

WWL-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1M1lYtY ) that members of an elite explosives team from the federal bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are helping with the investigation.

They were called in by St. Tammany Fire District Number 1 to help find the cause of Sunday’s fire, which left dozens of families homeless. Witnesses say an explosion was heard and felt before flames and smoke took over the building.
