DETROIT (AP) - The family of a Detroit man who died after a fight with an off-duty police officer is questioning law enforcement accounts of the dispute.

Detroit police say the man died after being struck in the head Monday in the west side backyard of the Lathrup Village officer. Investigators say the man jumped the fence as the off-duty officer was grilling, and an argument led to a physical fight.

Keith Young tells The Detroit News his brother-in-law Wayne Wheeler had an injury that would have prevented him from jumping the fence.

A funeral for the 40-year-old Wheeler was scheduled Friday.

Police say no weapons were used and it doesn’t appear the fight had anything to do with the officer’s profession. The men had an ongoing dispute.

No charges have been filed.
