FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina is getting a new area code next month but customers will see some changes beginning next week.

Local media outlets report the new area code - 854 - will overlap the existing 843 area code used in the eastern third of the state. The new code is needed because there are not enough phone numbers left with just one area code because of rapid coastal growth.

While the 854 code does not take effect until Oct. 19, it will mean changes for phone customers beginning next week.

Starting Sept. 19, customers dialing even local numbers in the 843 area code will also have to include the number one and the area code. Currently local calls can be made by just dialing seven numbers.
