SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A woman who fatally struck a homeless man with her vehicle and then left the scene has been sentenced to probation.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports (https://bit.ly/1MghJO5 ) 48-year-old Barbara Hanna was ordered Thursday to serve 200 hours of community service over the next three years. As part of a plea deal, Hanna pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of the accident that caused Lawrence Miera’s July 2014 death.

Hanna was driving down a Santa Fe road when she struck 59-year-old Miera, who police say hadn’t been in a crosswalk. Hanna left the scene and turned herself in to police days later.

Hanna, who told investigators she left the scene because she was panicked, could’ve been incarcerated for six years. She instead must complete community service at two homeless shelters.
