MIAMI (AP) - Authorities say a road ranger trying to move a stalled vehicle in South Florida is dead after being hit by a dump truck.

The Florida Highway Patrol reports that the accident occurred Tuesday afternoon on Florida’s Turnpike in southwest Miami-Dade County.

Officials say the truck was heading north as the road ranger, 47-year-old Andres Boligan, was assisting a vehicle that had been involved in a previous crash. As Boligan walked into the right lane to stop traffic, the truck locked its brakes, swerved out of control and struck the road ranger. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An FHP report says charges are pending.

Managed by Florida Department of Transportation, the purpose of road rangers is to provide free highway assistance to reduce delays and improve safety.
