PATERSON, N.J. (AP) - Authorities say a northern New Jersey police officer shot and killed a dog that was attacking its owners.

Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale says an 11-year-old boy called authorities Tuesday morning to say his parents were being attacked by the family’s pit bull terrier.

Speziale says the first officer to arrive at the house had to immediately shoot the dog. The 38-year-old man and 37-year-old woman were taken to St. Joseph’s Medical Center with multiple bite wounds.

The officer was also hospitalized and treated for trauma.

Animal control officials are testing the pit bull for rabies and other diseases. It’s not clear what caused the dog to attack.
