TULSA, Okla. (AP) - The U.S. Navy is naming a combat ship after the city of Tulsa.

Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus announced Tuesday that the next Independence-variant Littoral Combat Ship - or LCS - will be named the USS Tulsa.

This will be the second ship to be named after Oklahoma’s second largest city. The first USS Tulsa was a patrol gunboat commissioned in 1923 that was used in training exercises in Central America and during World War II it patrolled shores in China and the Philippines and served as an escort to supply ships in Australia.

The latest Tulsa will be built in Mobile, Alabama. It will be 419 feet long with operating at speeds in excess of 40 knots.
