FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Investigators have identified skeletal remains found west of Loveland as those of a 56-year-old man from Lafayette.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports (https://goo.gl/7QvqHT ) John Kelly Hawkins’ remains were found at the mouth of Big Thompson Canyon on Sept. 3. Debbie Reisdorff with the Larimer County coroner’s office says it could take another three to four weeks to determine the cause and manner of death.

Hawkins, who was reported missing in July, was last seen driving on U.S. Highway 34 near the canyon. Family members were concerned the avid hiker might have injured himself.
