CHALMETTE, La. (AP) - Louisiana police say a St. Bernard Parish sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man after a confrontation in Chalmette that briefly sent another deputy to the hospital.

State Trooper Evan Harrell says 21-year-old Tyrone Bass, of New Orleans, wielded an unidentified weapon during an altercation with a deputy Tuesday afternoon.

Harrell says the deputy was struck twice in the head while calling for backup from deputies, one of whom shot Bass. Harrell said he did not know why the deputy first approached Bass who was killed.

Authorities have not released the names of the deputies.

The Sheriff’s Office has turned over the investigation of the shooting to the State Police.

Harrell said Wednesday that Bass was black and the deputy involved in the shooting was white.
