TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The Pima County Board of Supervisors has approved a zoning code change to allow medical marijuana dispensaries and growth sites in zones designated as gateway and overlay zones.

The board voted 3-2 Tuesday to approve the code amendment.

Gateways zones are the main entries to the city.

Overlay zones cover specified areas of the county and exist on top of already zoned areas, amending that area’s zoning to allow or restrict land uses different than the existing zoning.

Included in the revised code is the county’s right to impose additional reasonable restrictions.

The approved zoning restriction won’t apply to historic zones.

The only operational medical marijuana dispensary in Pima County is in Ajo.

Authorities expect requests for additional sites will follow once the zoning changes take place in 30 days.
