PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - The Providence firefighters union has hired a security firm to watch over Mayor Jorge Elorza’s Silver Lake home after police began investigating a social media threat to burn his house down.

The Facebook threats appeared last weekend amid the mayor’s efforts to restructure the fire department. The city and the firefighter’s union remain deadlocked on salary and overtime issues.

The union president estimated the security guard would cost $500 per day to watch over Elorza’s house 24-hours a day. He says the union would continue paying the guard until police complete their investigation.

Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare confirmed a “criminal investigation” into the posts but would not disclose any other details.
