LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan is looking to create a license plate to raise money for the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

Legislation approved unanimously by the Senate Thursday would add the national park in the northwestern part of the Lower Peninsula to a list of license plate causes such as public universities and breast cancer awareness. People who buy a fundraising plate pay a $25 donation and $10 service fee above the cost of a standard plate.

The money raised would go to Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear, a nonprofit.

Supporters think demand for the plate would be significant. They say the plate not only would generate revenue to preserve history but also promote the scenic lakeshore.

Sen. Darwin Booher’s bill heads to the House.
