BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont officials say a state trooper who collapsed at a firing range in Jericho and was rushed to the hospital in critical condition has died.

The Burlington Free Press reports (https://bfpne.ws/1iAfyIC ) that a state police spokesman confirmed the trooper died at the University of Vermont Medical Center.

The trooper collapsed at about 2:30 p.m. on Thursday, during a training exercise at the range. The name of the trooper has not been released.

A University of Vermont Medical Center spokesman told the newspaper that reports the trooper had suffered a gunshot wound are false. He described it as a “medical event.”

A spokesman for Gov. Peter Shumlin - who is in New Hampshire - said the governor has been briefed.

The newspaper reports a substantial police presence outside the medical center.
