CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - A 24-hour vigil is under way in suburban Detroit to honor prisoners of war and those listed as missing in action who never returned to the U.S. from the Vietnam War.

The public is invited to participate in the event, which started Friday afternoon at Resurrection Cemetery in Macomb County’s Clinton Township. The vigil at the American Veterans Memorial was conducted by members of the Vietnam Veterans of America.

Cemetery officials say the Michigan traveling memorial to Vietnam War veterans also is on display.

The vigil has started on National POW/MIA Recognition Day and President Barack Obama has urged Americans to observe the day with ceremonies and activities.
