NEW YORK (AP) - Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson says he wants to be nominated to become a state Supreme Court judge.

In a statement Friday, Johnson said he’s asked Bronx Democratic Chairman and state Assemblyman Marcos Crespo for the nomination.

Johnson has served as the Bronx County District Attorney since 1989.

Before that, he was a criminal court judge, an assistant district attorney and worked for the Legal Aid Society.

Johnson says he would need to be nominated during a political convention on Sept. 24.

He says he will seek re-election if he is not nominated to the judicial post.

Crespo said in a statement that for Johnson to be on the ballot, delegates would need to choose him as their candidate at the upcoming political convention.
