BARRE, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont couple has pleaded not guilty after police say they abducted the woman’s 4-year-old granddaughter and took her to New York.

Forty-seven-year-old Dawn Hutchinson and 61-year-old Joel Rosenthal, both of Fayston, pleaded not guilty Thursday to unlawful restraint in Washington County criminal court. Hutchinson also pleaded not guilty to custodial interference.

State Police say the state Department for Children and Families obtained a court order to take custody of the girl on Sept. 4, but prosecutors say they took the girl to New York.

They were arrested a day later after New York State Police found them on Interstate 90 in Dewitt.

Hutchinson’s lawyer says there’s no evidence they fled and that they didn’t know the state was trying to take the girl.
