NEWARK, Del. (AP) - Delaware state Sen. Bryan Townsend is running for Congress.

The 34-year-old Newark Democrat announced Thursday that he’ll seek the state’s lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. It came one day after Rep. John Carney announced he would run for governor. Townsend says he’s ready to hear from the community what they need.

In an email to supporters, Townsend said his campaign will “champion policies that grow and strengthen the middle class, provide every child with an opportunity to succeed, promote equal justice in the criminal justice system, and ensure retirement security for our seniors.”

Rep. Bryon Short, a Highland Woods Democrat, has also expressed interest in the congressional seat.
