NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The USS Kauffman is being decommissioned in Norfolk.

The Kauffman is the last Norfolk-based, Oliver Hazard Perry-Class frigate in service. The ship is being decommissioned at a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk on Friday.

The Kauffman has been in service for 28 years and was the last frigate to be sent on an operational deployment. It returned to its home port in Norfolk in July.

The Kauffman decommissioning leaves the USS Simpson as the Navy’s last Oliver Hazard Perry-Class frigate. The USS Simpson is homeported in Mayport, Florida, and is scheduled to be decommissioned on Sept. 29.

The littoral combat ship will replace the Navy’s frigates.
