PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - A Maine man’s letter describing a Portland police officer’s compassionate response to his struggle with heroin addiction has social media buzzing.

The homeless man wrote that he met Officer Sean Hurley on Brighton Avenue last month after he called to report a crime. He had just been put out on the street and says he was contemplating suicide.

He said that after he decided to tell Hurley about his situation, Hurley was brought to tears and offered to take him to a shelter.

The man says he was struck by Hurley’s compassion and has been clean ever since.

The Portland Police Department posted the letter on its Facebook page Thursday- at the writer’s request -drawing about 1,500 “likes” and comments praising the officer.
