SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A man has been charged with child abuse after his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son suffered brain injuries and was left partially paralyzed.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports (https://bit.ly/1P7msiN ) 25-year-old Benjamin Maes was being held in the Santa Fe County jail Thursday on $25,000 bail.

Police say Maes had called the toddler’s mother at work Tuesday, saying the boy was throwing up and wouldn’t stop screaming. The mother arrived home and found that the boy appeared to be having a seizure.

The child was airlifted to an Albuquerque hospital with bleeding in the brain, a separated right shoulder and partial paralysis. He remained at the hospital Thursday. His condition is not known.

A Santa Fe police spokesman said Maes was interviewed by police, but details of the interview haven’t been released.
