PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities say a man who rescued a young woman assaulted by a purse snatcher has died after fighting with the attacker.

Phoenix police say 42-year-old Miguel Jose Briseno was pronounced dead at a hospital after the incident early Friday.

They say a man approached a group of people standing outside a Phoenix home near Interstate 10 and 48th Street and tried to grab a purse from a 23-year-old woman.

Briseno came to the woman’s aid and got into a physical confrontation with the assailant that left him bleeding from the neck.

Police say the attacker released the purse and fled the scene.

It’s unclear how Briseno was injured as police say no weapons were seen by witnesses to the altercation.

Police now are trying to locate the suspect.
