BERLIN, Vt. (AP) - A man has been hospitalized after the ultralight aircraft he was piloting crashed shortly after takeoff from Knapp International Airport in Berlin, Vermont.

Police say 67-year-old Dennis Carver of East Montpelier was the only person on the plane when it crashed about 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Officials say Carver missed the runway when he tried returning to the airport and landed hard in a field. The plane was destroyed on impact.

Carver suffered cuts to his hand and head. He was taken to the CentralVermont Medical Center Hospital.

Officials with the state Aviation Department are investigating the incident.
