ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A 22-year classroom veteran is New York State’s Teacher of the Year.

The state Education Department on Thursday announced Dana McDonough as the 2016 honoree. She has taught first or second grade in her hometown of Newburgh for her entire career.

Education officials say McDonough meets with the families of each of her incoming students, often at their homes, and emails parents weekly with updates about lessons and activities.

As state Teacher of the Year, she will represent other teachers on issues throughout the year and will be New York’s nominee for National Teacher of the Year.
